Understanding Mudslides and Their Impact

What is a Mudslide

Mudslides can travel at high speeds and follow natural drainage paths such as creeks. This makes mudslides extremely dangerous in the areas where developments overlap with natural slopes.

What Causes Mudslides 

Mudslides are typically triggered by a combination of environmental and human factors. The most common causes include:

Heavy Rainfall and Snowmelt

Long periods of heavy rain, sudden downpours or extensive snow melting rapidly soaks the ground reducing its ability of the soil to hold together. When water pressure builds within the slope it can lead to sudden failure.

Wildfires

Burned landscapes lose vegetation that normally stabilizes soil. Without root systems to hold the ground in place, slopes become far more vulnerable during rainfall events.

Steep Terrain

Places that are surrounded by mountain regions naturally carry a higher risk. Gravity plays a huge role, especially where slopes are already unstable.

Land Disturbance

How we move water through slopes is critical. Having a proper drainage system reduces saturation and internal pressures. 

Vegetation and Erosion Control

When we reintroduce plant life it can help improve soil stability over time and reduce the surface from breaking down. 

Debris Catchment Nets

Steel nets can be installed to block debris flow and allow water thru. After the event these nets can be cleared out and reset to protect again.

Passive Barriers

Earth or concrete barriers can be erected to block or divert mudflows from know slide paths.

Regular inspections and site assessments can help identify early warning signs before a failure occurs.
