What Exactly is a Micropile?

A micropile (or minipile) is a small-diameter, drilled and grouted deep foundation element—typically 4 to 10 inches in diameter—that transfers structural loads into competent soil or bedrock.

Think of it as a high-strength steel pin driven deep into the earth. Despite the small footprint, a micropile can carry substantial compression or tension loads thanks to the drilled bond zone within soil or rock.

Micropiles are engineered solutions, but they’re also practical tools—fast to install, adaptable, and reliable in the toughest ground conditions.

Core Components of a Micropile:

  • Steel Casing: This is a temporary (or can even be a permanent) steel pipe drilled into the ground to maintain the borehole’s stability.
  • Cement Grout: High-strength grout  is injected into the bore to fill the space around the casing and reinforcing element, creating the load-bearing bond with the soil/rock.
  • Central Reinforcement: This is a high-strength steel bar or threadbar inserted into the center of the grout column to provide the pile’s primary load capacity.
