Stabilizing the Abbott Hut

Protecting a nationally significant alpine hut from ongoing slope failure at 2,925 m

Abbott Hut, built by hand in 1922 from local stone and operated for decades as a backcountry refuge, is a rare alpine heritage asset in Banff National Park. The work was part of a broader effort to respond to worsening instability at the site and protect public, heritage, and operational value at one of Canada’s most exposed mountain facilities. Ultimately large slope instabilities resulted in the decommissioning the hut in 2023, 100 years after initial construction.

PROJECT IMPACTS

Stabilizing Canada's highest-altitude heritage site.

GRW protected a 1922 Swiss-built stone refuge, bridging a century of alpine history with modern engineering. By securing the foundation zone at 2,925 m, the project preserved a nationally significant asset and ensured the safety of Parks Canada personnel and the backcountry community.Rockfall mitigation combines hazard assessment, slope scaling, reinforcement, and catchment or barrier systems to reduce rockfall risk to an acceptable level

Construction where others couldn't reach.

Operating in a high-angle environment with over a foot of new snowfall daily, GRW successfully executed a complex drilling and grouting program. The project proved that technical construction can be maintained even when restricted to helicopter-only logistics and rope-based work positioning.

Solving instability in a shifting environment.

GRW tackled the “un-routine” by adapting portable drilling systems to handle permafrost-related ground conditions and steep, exposed terrain. This response provided the critical stabilization needed to counter the slope instability threatening the historic structure.

Stabilizing the Abbott Hut at Abbot Pass

Canada’s highest-altitude mountain hut; stone refuge originally built in 1922 by Swiss mountain guides using local quarried stone; later slope instability drove both the 2018 stabilization work and, eventually, the later dismantling decision.
